FEEL: It’s not a Four Letter Word

One of the dreaded things to be labeled at work is ‘too emotional’. There is a small list of emotions acceptable to show at work, which is smaller than other social environments. When people feel emotions outside of this list, they do not know what to do. Some examples of appropriate emotions to feel at work are contentment, happy, frustrated. When you feel emotions to the extreme, or outside of what one typically feel at work, they do not know what to do so they shut down or explode or cry. Perhaps getting the label “too emotional”.

As a way to cope in the work environment, people have stopped feeling because they do not want this label. However, what is happening is they are not using a vital function of their senses needed in the work environment: feelings. When using only your mind, there is something that is missed. Some of the most prominent business people use feelings when making business deals, daily decisions, and professional relationships.

Emotions are one of the most powerful tools when used appropriately. The purpose of emotions is to give cues as to what is going on in you and the environment around you. They tell us when something is wrong, when something is good, and when we need more information. They are our intuition, our basic fight or flight. Without them, we would not survive. Granted the workplace may not be a primal environment, but it is a place where we need our basic instinct. Instead of shutting them down in the workplace, acknowledge them fully, and act on appropriately.

Using emotions as a resource to help you in the workplace along with the mind, knowledge, experience will enhance your ability to make decisions and respond appropriately. Feeling your emotions doesn’t mean you have act on them, but paying attention to them, processing them and connecting them with consciousness will provide you with a powerful tool.
